What are Equine Therapies?

In the US, Canada and Australia, Equine Assisted Therapies have been used successfully for numerous years with measurable proven track records, and astounding success rates.  EquATA therapy centre is based in Grafton Village, Northamptonshire and we aim to emulate the same success rates here in the UK.

  • Following is a short video, followed by further written information below it, to give you an introduction to equine assisted learning, and how an Equine Specialist may guide a client within a horse assisted therapy session.

Equine Assisted Therapy works in the same way as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, as well as Equine Experiential Learning.  Horses are used as a powerful, effective therapeutic tool for emotional growth.  Case studies in America illustrate an extraordinary impact on individuals or groups where a variety of mental and emotional health issues have been successfully addressed by this form of therapy.

Horses are highly intelligent, powerful and large animals that can appear intimidating to us, and can thereby create a natural opportunity for us humans, (especially for those of us who may need therapy), to learn to overcome fear and lack of confidence. This then enables us, through further therapy, to develop trust, responsibility and self-reliance.

Horses are social animals, not much different to humans, with distinct personalities, moods, attitudes and also a certain hierarchy within their group. When working and caring for them, horses require people to be engaged, physically and mentally.

EquATA specially selected therapy horses have the ability to mirror exactly what the human body language is telling them and therefore present us with the opportunity to learn about ourselves, our relationship problems and patterns.  This provides us with an opportunity to see our obstacles or areas where we seem to have become stuck in life.  The horses do this in a non-threatening and totally non-judgemental engagement with people.

Therapy using horses provides excellent opportunities for metaphorical learning in a pleasant and fun environment.  Results are comparatively fast through using effective techniques when working with even the most challenging of individuals or groups of people who are in need of therapy.
