Is it important that I like horses or have some prior knowledge?

Not at all, as the focus of Equine Assisted Therapy is not on riding and horsemanship but rather on you as a person and the needs and issues you would like to tackle within the therapy sessions.

Will I  be  safe  around  horses?

EquATA horses are gentle and very intelligent creatures.  Completely non-judgmental, they accept you the way you are and they have been specially selected for the therapy sessions.  In addition, there is always an experienced Equine Specialist present, as well as a Mental Health Specialist, who are both qualified experts in their fields, making sure that the learning environment is relaxed, non-threatening and fun to be part of.

Why horses rather than other animals?

EquATA horses are specially selected and have the ability to mirror the client, reacting in dynamic and sensitive ways to what human body language is telling them.  They respond by communicating in their own body language, giving immediate feed-back in a completely honest and totally non-judgmental way.  Horses have no ulterior motives and the role they can play in therapy results in a unique and intense learning experience for the client in a fun environment and relaxed atmosphere.

Who is part of the therapy team?

As well as the horses, the human part of the therapy team consists of a qualified Mental Health Therapist as well as a Horse Specialist who both bring their own professional expertise and combined experience into the therapy sessions for the benefit of the clients.  Together they help clients to raise awareness of themselves, their beliefs, fears or their attitudes and therefore pave the way for lasting beneficial change.
