Horse Boy Method

Horse Boy Method was founded by Rupert Isaacson whose son, Rowan, is autistic. Over a period of several years the pair virtually lived in the saddle of a quarter horse called Betsy. Mr Isaacson realised that Rowan was really benefitting from his interaction with horses as, over time, a much greater level of verbal communication between father and son was made possible.

The story of how Rowan was able to develop and eventually interact not just with his father but also with the outside world, is told in a best selling book and film; both called ‘The Horse Boy’ by Rupert Isaacson.

Rupert’s success with Rowan inspired him to offer his techniques to other autistic children and his success was repeated in a significantly high percentage of cases. Now he holds training courses to enable others to use The Horse-Boy Method which helps many more autistic children and their families.

Method 1

Back Riding

At EquATA we offer back riding (which involves the child and a trained adult riding together). It is a very effective method for opening communication of all sorts. Long lining is also good for working with older children (in this case the child is on horseback and the horse is controlled by a qualified adult from behind using long reins). In both instances the adult who interacts with the child is behind them which avoids eye contact; extremely challenging to autistic children.

Method 2

Sensory work

We are also able to offer sensory work. Many children on the autistic spectrum benefit from sensory therapies and horses can be excellent therapists. The sensory method involves the child lying next to the horse’s skin or by other physical contact with the animal, such as stroking or grooming.

Method 3

Academics on Horse-Back

As learning receptors in the brain appear to open, owing to the stimulation of the child’s system by the horse’s movement, it is also possible to offer the child the opportunity to engage in learning by using letters or pictures in the sand or around the arena.

This method can only be offered by certified professionals and here at EquATA two trained practitioners are available. Ellie Hawkins currently focuses on back riding and Kevin Quick provides the sensory work experience.
All methods can be seen in more detail on Mr Isaacson’s website www.horseboymethod.com
